Title
Old St. Mary's (Third Location)
Subject
Old St. Mary's had six locations from its founding in 1833 to the present. This is the rhird.
Description
The third location of Old St. Mary's was on the southwest corner of Madison and Wabash. It was a much grander structure than the previous churches, being as it was made out of brick. This also represented the status of the Catholic community in Chicago which, as of November 28, 1843, had become its own diocese. Rev. William J. Carter of New York City was named Bishop. He arrived in Chicago in 1844 and took up his appointment here. The church did not survive the Chicago Fire of 1871.
