Parish and Church Locations established under Archbishop Quigley, 2nd half of term (1908-1914)

Description

James Edward Quigley was appointed to the position of archbishop in December of 1902, and against his own wishes. He had been a bishop in Buffalo, New York before the appointment, and wrote a letter to Rome asking to keep his position as it was. In the election process, Quigley beat out Bishop John L. Spalding of Illinois, with help from Cardinal Satolli who spoke out in Quigley’s favor. The decision to go with a person from outside of the archdiocese of Chicago was perhaps one that sought to bring in someone without any previous affiliations to any factions in the city. Seeing as the years leading up to Quigley’s election and up to 1915 were ones of Progressivism and social reform, perhaps the city wanted a leader that would have no previous allegiances within the city. In Buffalo, he was also known to have maintained great control in handling the multiple nationalities of his diocese.

Quigley was known for his involvement in urban politics, specifically those of the working class. In New York he fought for workers’ rights and fought against socialism in unions. Despite being a candidate for cardinal, he ended up serving as archbishop until his death in 1915.

The churches established during the first half of his term can be seen in the light blue dots along the map.
